A few Mobile Marketing Tips

Mobile ads need a stronger call to action than regular ads, so make sure that you’re proficient at providing this type of material. A dozen exclamation points and some words like “must” and “now” aren’t going to cut it. You need to come up with a wording that will persuade people in only a short sentence or two.

Get your website mobile friendly! Take a look at your website on a mobile device. Don’t like what you see? Most don’t until you get your site onto a mobile-friendly platform. Look at your content management system to see if it offers a mobile plugin, or talk to a local digital advertising agency to build a solution for you. Either way, it is important to make your site look professional and engaging on mobile devices! Read More…

Groovy Mobile Marketing Tips |Get your SMS Text Message Open

Here’s a short list of 5 Mobile Marketing Tips to help make sure your SMS mobile messages are received, opened, and acted upon.

1. When building a cellular phone number list to market to, be sure to use acceptable practices. Some people scrape mobile phone numbers from anywhere they can get them, and then send their spammy SMS messages in hopes of making a conversion. These messages are usually of no interest to the recipient, and will be received quite negatively by the people receiving your message. This is a sure fire way to have your message rejected, or even you future messages blocked.  But without these mobile numbers you don’t have a list to market to, so let’s discuss an ethical way to building a targeted SMS list. The best method is to build a lead capture page (either web or mobile) that collects users mobile number in exchange for some valuable information they would be interested in. Then when you send out SMS promotion, the recipient will be more receptive to your offer. This is how you develop a responsive list that is interest in offers specific to your niche.

2. Be honest with the prospect and clearly state your intentions in the opt in form. This way the prospect will know what to expect in exchange for providing their mobile number.  Some concerns to address will be the frequency your SMS messages could be sent to their mobile phones. Be sure to explain they will have the option to un-subscribe to your messages at any time, and providing their mobile number is not required to receive the opt-in gift. The opt-in form  should require them however to enter their name and email.  This way, even if you don’t get their mobile number for now, you will be developing an online list to build a relationship with.  As they become more trusting of you online, you can request their mobile number again in the future. You will find people are reluctant to give their mobile number to any stranger. Build trust first, then perhaps offer a mobile download in the future in exchange of their mobile number.

3. Send your messages using dedicated short codes if you can. Delivering your messages through dedicated short codes will cost more than other methods, but the return will be the assurance your offer is delivered the way you want to be perceived by your prospects. A dedicated common short code (CSC) is a 5 or 6 digit sender ID number assigned to a single company and provides:

  • Bi-directional easy to use communication.
  • Unlimited keywords use.
  • Data ownership of sent and received messages.
  • ‘Vanity’ short codes using text rather than numbers.
  • The least amount of service cancellation risk caused by 3rd party actions.
  • No sending unsolicited SMS text messages.
  • Cannot send SMS messages that contain alcohol, adult, or tobacco related content.

4. Twitter and Adword users will be astute with mobile marketing, since you must convey your message in a very short amount of text.  SMS messages are limited to only 160 characters per message. It may take some practice to develop messages that clearly convey your offer within these limited characters. Mobile users are already familiar with acronyms commonly used in texting so take advantage of them if you must. You may also find it helpful to shorten words like “be” with the letter B, and refrain from spelling out all numbers. These tactics should only be used as last resort after you have shortened your message as much as possible using standard grammar.  These fancy tactics could be a distraction for some, and totally misunderstood by others, so always use them with moderation.

5. Personalize your SMS messages by addressing the person by their first name. This information is easily obtainable by simply asking for it on your opt-in sign-up form. Studies have shown that even on a subconscious level, people are more responsive to offers when personally addressed in your messages. It also shows a level of courtesy and professionalism in your business. Many mobile marketing systems will provide a place to merge this information right into the message, so take advantage and utilize this functionality.

Can Apple iPhone on Verizon slow Androids Growth?

Steve Jobs and Apples decision to remain exclusive to AT&T since 2007may have contributed to Google’s Android operating system rapid adoption.  The Android astronomical rise in popularity now captures 32% of new smart-phone sales vs. iPhones 25% of sales.  With Android being offered by many cellular networks and a large number of mobile phone manufacturers building handsets, Apple hopes to slow the growth of Android adopters users by allowing the iPhone on the Verizon network.

Apple is said to be manufacturing the iPhone 4 to be ready for the Verizon network early in 2011.  The New York Times stated an anonymous source confirms the plans, but they are of course confidential and that he didn’t wish to risk losing his Apple contacts.  Verizon and Apple and both declined to comment.

A  major turn-off some people purchasing the iPhone was reluctance to join AT&T’s network.  With stories abounding about  AT&T’s spotty coveragein key cities, such as New York and San Francisco,  mobile users on the iPhone fence may now consider Apples iPhone over the Andriod on the Verizon network.  The only key feature AT&T subscribers will enjoy over Verizon iPhone users, is the ability to browse the web while on a phone call.   This feature may not be enough incentive for loyal Verizon customers to select AT&T.

Insiders at Verizon have said to be  testing the network to assure they can handle the heavy data load imposed by iPhone users.  Verizon wants to avoid the customer service debacle experienced by ATT subscribers and the media attention.   Verizon’s new 4G L.T.E. Long Term Evolution network will be rolled out to 38 US cities and 60 airports by year end.  While the 3G network will continue to expand, 3G phones will not work on the new L.T.E network.  However, new 4G phones will be backwards compatible with the 3G network.  The L.T.E. network will provide 4G coverage to 1/3 of the popluation by 2011 with new phones, tablets, and the iPhone 4  available for the L.T.E. network.

For now, the iPhone remains the top selling smart phone in the US.  However, markets across the world without access to the iPhone, have quickly taken market share and have made Android based mobile phones the top seller worldwide.   According to market research firm Comscore, US sales of Android based phones grew from 866,000 users last year to 10.9 million users  August 2010 . Over the same period, Apples iPhone growth was 7.8 million to 13.5 million August 2010.  Apple is trying to keep the US market lead by offering the Verizon network.  It is felt that Apple has picked over the potential iPhone adopters on the ATT network and Verizon offers them the best opportunity for growth.   Some analysts believe the Verizon partnership could add an additional 10 million adopters to Apples iPhone user base.

Some interesting facts:

Much of AT&T’s recent growth can be attributed to Apples iPhones exclusive relationship nearly catching Verizon.  Verizon has the largest subscriber base of 92.1 million (as of Q2 2010) vs AT&T’s 90.1 million subscribers.  Together the hold 62% of the nationwide subscriber base,  representing 70% of total U.S. mobile data revenue.

What is Bluetooth Marketing?

Mobile phone can be considered one of the most in-demand gadgets
that people use nowadays. It is now a basic necessity with various
capabilities made available by the vendors (such as Nokia,
Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, LG) and by the telecom operators
manage to create and innovate just to keep their subscribers hooked in
telecommunications industry. As handy as they may seem, the features
and services that can be enjoyed are way beyond what people could
normally notice. Voice and video calls, texts, gaming applications,
camera and video features, FM radio tuner – these are the basic
functions that one can do using a mobile phone. But ever heard of
getting freebies and promo updates in your phone while staying
outdoors? Yes, this is possible through Bluetooth Marketing.

Bluetooth technology enables wireless exchange of information over
short range of distance; depending on the power class used but 10-meter
range is the most common, between one master and one or many slave
devices (7 simultaneous slaves maximum). Information transferred can be
various media – photos, videos, documents, and surprisingly,
advertisements
! This has been effective due to these advantages:

a. Low cost equipment and services needed. Advertisers do not need
to deal with telecom operators’ SMS (short message service) broadcasts
to their respective subscribers. A Bluetooth transmitter to be
installed in commonly crowded places like malls, trade fairs,
supermarkets, public vehicles and airports, can broadcast to the
specific consumers whom they need to inform, regardless of which
operator that mobile user currently camps in. It allows effortless
spreading of data like a virus, only with a positive purpose and
message.

b. Widespread use of mobile phones in public area exposes themselves
not just to radio frequencies of telecom providers but as well as
Bluetooth system hotspots.

c. Acknowledgement from recipient or target market provided
immediately. Unlike SMS broadcasts, mobile users can allow or discard
messages
sent via Bluetooth. To top that, the target buyer who is just
a few meters away can readily check on the promoter’s shop and purchase
as asked in the ad!

d. Transfer of data is secured and fast. Bluetooth technology which
uses the unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) 2.4GHz
short-range RF band and frequency-hopping can achieve data rate from 1
-3 Mbps depending on the modulation used. Frequency-hopping technology
ensures efficient use of radio spread spectrum by dividing the
information into frames of data during transmission.

e. Calculating the fast speed of message transfer and the
availability of target market in strategic locations, advertisers can
be overwhelmed with the impact that Bluetooth marketing can benefit
both
the business owners and their consumers.

f. The flexibility of marketing is also possible, meaning,
broadcasting of ads to Bluetooth-enabled phones can be turned on or
off, as needed.

Word of mouth, print media, television and billboards are not the
only options which advertisers explore. It is smart, indeed, to
maximize the use of technology today to cope up with the demands of
information dissemination amongst vast crowd with different profiles
and interests. Bluetooth marketing is another milestone in converting
the constructive use of technology in business and entertainment. So
the next time you plan of going out in malls or anywhere public, try
keeping the Bluetooth connectivity in your mobile phone on. The next
best treat could be waiting around, only yet to be received.
